Berkshire Place, currently located in a small building of 1888, is being reborn as a new 44,000 square foot facility at 290 South Street in Pittsfield, MA. Allegrone Companies continues the progression of the long-awaited retirement home as construction manager.
PITTSFIELD -- Despite some harsh weather earlier this year, construction of a $10 million retirement home is on track, officials say, and the new facility could open before the snow flies again.
Construction on the 54-bed Berkshire Place began early last November at the site of the former St. Teresa's Church on South Street.
"The crew that's been working on this project has been fantastic," said Berkshire Place Executive Director Edward Forfa.

THE AIA’S SMALL PROJECTS AWARD RECOGNIZES GREAT ARCHITECTURE ON A SMALL SCALE.
The American Institute of Architects has just announced the winners of its 2014 Small Projects Award, a prize recognizing some of the country's best design and construction on a small scale. This year’s crop of winners features a handful of stunning residential designs that will make you want to pack up and move immediately.
The design of the apartment is inspired by a melting snowfield in spring, when nature slowly revives from winter and offers a contrast of cold and warm, white and colored. This atmosphere was translated into architecture by hand-plastered, white shells, which cover walls and the ceiling and create a seamless space, which guides visitors naturally through the apartment. The curves of the interior responds in a very direct way to the outside landscape of mountains and valleys.
Plywood, the manufactured wood panel from the family of manufactured boards, which includes medium-density fiber board, particle board and chipboard, has recently been making appearances as a material for interior space. Made from thin sheets of wood veneer, Plywood used as an interior cladding, adds a modern look, which is both warm and clean.
